In the article "A Slow Return to Normal Skips the Gas Station" the author Elizabeth A. Harris talks about the struggle of getting gas that many new yorkers are facing. People have been facing up to 5 hours in line. They take breaks to get food but leave their cars at the pump. The emergency management officials decided to reserve gas for emergency vehicles which frustrated many. There was not enough to go around. The department tried to send generators to as many gas stations as possible. A lot of people however decide to just sit it out in block-long lines until gas arrives. Many people think that New York and New Jersey were completely unprepared for a hurricane like this.
I agree that New York was very unprepared. we had no idea that so many places would black out and how little gas would be left. We also didn't prepare for flooding very well. Chris Christie and Andrew M. Cuomo ordered odd and even days to get gas but for whatever reason, people were confused. I think this entire gas thing threw many people off. In the suburbs there were near to no cars because there is no power.
If this had happened in Florida or North Carolina or South Carolina they would've been probably very prepared. New York and New Jersey were both completely unprepared because hurricanes this strong near to never get to the tri-state area. If a tourist came from one of those commonly hit spots to New York they would probably be horrified of how we handled it.
After reading this article, I have realized that New York City is completely unprepared for a hurricane like this. If i was part of the government in the tri-state area I would have a big meeting. We would discuss things like: how to prevent flooding next time, how to make our electricity system more reliable, and making sure there is an extra supply of gas around. I really hope that the government tries to accomplish something like this. Maybe less people would get so angry and be without heat, gas, and electricity.
